Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Con Edison.
Management Associate
The interview began with a recruiter call to discuss my background and suitability for the role. This was followed by a phone screening where they asked general behavioral questions, focusing on my past experiences and their relevance to the position. They also presented hypothetical scenarios, such as dealing with a gas leak during field testing or managing an irate customer. The process concluded with an onsite interview.
- If you were conducting tests in the field and discovered a gas leak, what steps would you take?
- Can you share some of your past experiences and explain how they align with the requirements of this position?
- Describe your approach to de-escalating and resolving a situation with an extremely upset customer.
Manager
For roles below the 3 band level, the process is pretty much the same. First, there's an optional phone interview to weed out a lot of people. If they have multiple openings, they'll talk to about 2 to 8 candidates. This is a panel interview with the hiring manager, another manager, and someone from HR. Sometimes a fourth person might be there, but not often. The first part of the interview is technical and specific to the job, though it might be brief or skipped for new or developing roles. After that, they hit you with about 7 or 8 behavioral questions to see how prepared you are and if you'll fit in. These questions focus on teamwork, leadership, innovation, adaptability, and understanding the company's ethics. The whole thing can take anywhere from an hour to over three hours.
- Can you share an instance where you developed an innovative concept?
- Describe a time you were part of a team and contributed to a new idea.
Management Associate
The interview was set up through my University's career center. I was chosen from a big group of candidates, only 6 were chosen. It was one of the worst interview experiences I've ever had. It felt like they picked someone random to represent the school. The interviewer read questions from a paper booklet and wrote down each answer. This made the interview very disjointed, and I had to repeat my answers multiple times. They asked typical questions like my weaknesses, strengths, best project, and worst project. What bothered me was that she wrote comments for the career center saying I didn't know enough about Con Edison, even though I spent time explaining how I could make a difference to the company and how they operate in the power business. I asked about the position's status but didn't hear back for two months. So, thanks but no thanks.
- Can you tell me about your best project and your worst project?
- Do you have a driver's license?
