Behavioral Presentation

The interview process was well-defined, well-thought-out, and moved along at a decent clip. I had a pleasant screener call, and the panel interviews were also good. The final stage was an on-site interview with the entire team, which included a presentation. A senior leader who is above the hiring manager met with me one-on-one at the end to get a better understanding of my background, what I'm looking for, and if I'd be a good cultural fit. In the end, we determined it wasn't the right match, but the hiring manager was kind enough to confirm it wasn't quite right and gave me some feedback to help me improve my presentations for future interviews.

I interviewed for the Accounting Manager role in Lenexa, KS back in August 2022. The first step was a 30-minute phone call with HR, mainly for pre-screening, some behavioral questions, and to see if I was a good fit. The next week, HR invited me to a virtual interview with the hiring manager, which lasted about an hour. We discussed my experience and how I manage a team of seven. A little over a week after that, HR let me know to expect an update the following week on the next steps. I replied to thank them for the update, but that was the last I heard. I was ghosted after that. It's been 8 months and the position is still open. It feels unprofessional and disrespectful to ghost candidates; unfortunately, it's become common. Employers should communicate with candidates about their status, even a simple email letting them know they didn't advance would be appreciated.

I went through four interviews for this role. It started with a recruiter phone screen, followed by an interview with the VP of IT. After that, there were group interviews. The initial phone screen and the VP interview were good experiences. The VP was very helpful in explaining the company, its culture, and answering my questions. Then came the group interviews where I met other PMs, and also two people from outside the PM department – one from Help Desk and one from Information Security. The first group session was okay, with standard questions. However, the second group session with the non-PMs was not great. They seemed to have limited interaction with PMs and suggested the role might be seen as just executing tasks. The security person seemed disengaged, and the other individual questioned my ambition. This session felt like a waste of time and negatively impacted my perception, especially since they couldn't offer much insight into how the role integrates with their work. I felt the purpose of their involvement was to assess leadership skills. After this, I knew I probably wasn't moving forward. It took about three weeks and me reaching out a couple of times before the VP finally responded with a rejection, stating they 'went another direction.' When I asked for feedback from her team, she didn't reply, which I found unprofessional. Even before the rejection, during a salary discussion with the recruiter, I got the impression they might not meet my expectations, indicated by the 'more to our benefits than just salary' talk.

I applied online via LinkedIn on May 14th and got a call from the internal recruiter on May 20th to set up an interview for May 28th. The interview with the hiring manager went really well, and I heard back by 4pm the same day to schedule a second interview. I was hoping for an offer the next day and had other interviews lined up for the next day and the following week. The recruiter, who was great, managed to schedule the second interview for the next afternoon. I can't say enough good things about the recruiter and how she worked with my schedule to fit me in for the second interview the next day. She was super responsive and a pleasure to work with.
