Strategist, External Communications
I had a call with the Senior Recruiter that was about 30 minutes. She asked questions that were basically the job description rephrased, like she was reading them. It felt like it went okay. Then, she asked for work samples I had already put in my portfolio link, and after that, she just ghosted me and didn't reply to my calls or emails.
- Given that this role requires writing whitepapers and data sheets, could you share your experience with such projects?
Coach Operator
It's a long selection process but they'll keep you updated via email. You fill out an online application on communitytransit.org. There's a questionnaire/skills test, and a physical fitness test. You need to have had fewer than 2 accidents (preventable or not) in the last 5 years. Then there's a panel interview with HR and Ops staff, followed by a drug screen and a medical physical to get your medical card.
- What makes you want to become a coach operator?
Coach Operator
This hiring process was super long and frankly a nightmare. It's weird because they seem to want to hire people who have NO prior commercial driving experience. Based on what I've heard from folks who've worked at Community Transit (not part-time), they treat their employees really rough. I've actually interviewed with them at least three times over the last 11 years, and they still didn't hire me, which is wild considering I haven't had a single commercial accident or moving violation in over 21 years with my Class A CDL and P-1 passenger endorsement. My driving record for the past 5 years is spotless. Also, it's worth noting that some of their drivers are okay, but most of them seem like amateur hacks. And get this – all their commuter routes, both CT and Sound Transit, are actually contracted out to First Transit America. Their drivers deal with poorly maintained vehicles, get paid way less (like 1/3rd of what others make), and have terrible benefits, all while facing the exact same risks and responsibilities. Honestly, screw Community Transit.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a challenging customer.
Coach Operator
The process was long and slow. HR tells you one thing but when you start working, it's different. Even if you show them something in writing, they say it's old info.
- Can you tell me about your driving experience?
- What's your driving record like?
- What class of license do you hold?
