First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Community Mental Health Authority.
Therapist
The interviews at CMH are very long, so prepare to be there for a while. They have to write down your answers. My interviews were typically with 2 interviewers including a direct supervisor and another employee. There were lots of questions related to past experience (name a time when…) but it had to be specific to the population you are interviewing to work in.
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with your supervisor's decision and how you handled it.
Internal Auditor
Got a call the day after applying online. They wanted to interview me the very next day, so I didn't have much time to prep. I met with three interviewers who took turns asking questions and writing down my responses.
- What would you do in a given situation?
- Describe a time you handled a specific type of situation.
Family Support Worker
A professor I knew connected me with a supervisor, which helped my application get noticed. I got a call and was scheduled for a group interview. It was me and two other applicants, and the interview was led by two supervisors and a senior FSW. It felt pretty relaxed. If they thought I was a good fit after the interview, my application went to HR for reference checks. At least two of my three references needed to check out for the job offer. After that, I'd have to pass a drug screen and background check.
- Can you tell me about your experience working with individuals who have behavioral challenges?
- Could you describe your experience assisting people with emotional disabilities?
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor
I was called in for an interview and met with the supervisor and a few others from the team. The supervisor was the only one who asked questions, while the others mostly took notes and graded my responses. The final candidate was chosen by HR based on an average of the responses, because of union/seniority rules. The questions were situational and behavioral. If you have experience in this field, you should be able to recall instances where you handled similar issues. It's important to always show that your actions favored the consumer when describing how you handled situations. The needs of the company and the consumers are more important than the employee's.
- Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or rude consumer or colleague.
