First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.
Program Manager
First, you'll meet with the recruiter. Then, you'll have a chat with the program director to discuss the role in detail. If you both feel it's a good match, you'll proceed to meet other program managers and team members for another interview.
- What makes you want this job?
Chief Financial Officer
The CEO and some executives introduced themselves, making a point to share their pronouns. While I'm all for inclusivity, this felt like virtue signaling rather than a practical business focus. I then remembered the HR Director mentioning a department voted to unionize. It clicked – the organization, rightly so, decided not to proceed with my candidacy. I credit them for that clear decision.
- What are the primary drivers of homelessness in your opinion?
Intake Specialist
I sent in my resume and cover letter. I was asked to define homelessness in my cover letter and I did. Finding the office was a bit of a challenge because it's like a maze with all the coalition offices in one area. I was given a sheet with 5 questions, including two scenarios. The interviewer was a bit messy and her office was unkempt, and she seemed stressed by the nature of the job. I made a comment about avoiding procrastination in response to a scenario question, but I didn't like her attitude towards the victims. She said it was an emotional job and that people in social services have slip-ups. I didn't think that was okay. She was a nice lady otherwise. It was unprofessional that there was no feedback afterwards. Overall, it's a great organization for people with a lot of compassion and altruistic intentions.
- What would you do if you arrived at work on a Tuesday and found multiple messages from a victim needing immediate assistance? She met with you yesterday and urgently needs bus tokens, a hotel voucher, and diapers. She's now waiting in the lobby. How would you proceed?
Maintenance
The first interview was with two managers who were really nice and asked some unique questions, some I'd never encountered before. I also had a quiz that tested my maintenance knowledge, which I thought was a smart way to see areas for improvement. The second interview was with the boss of those managers and one of the managers from the first meeting. I was undecided about returning to full-time work, but by the time I got the call for the second interview, I'd decided to prioritize my schooling. They were really understanding about my choice and said I could reapply later if my situation changed. It was a great experience, and I'm keen to work for this company after I finish my studies.
- Could you explain your preferred management style and provide reasons for it?
