Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CN.
Intern
The interview process included questions about your past experiences and some technical questions related to the position. It also covered any relevant work experience you have regarding the job role in your past.
- Could you tell me about yourself and your past experiences?
- Do you have any past work experience relevant to this job?
Intern
Everything was online, and I had to record myself answering 4 questions. 2 were in French and 2 in English. I had 30 seconds to look at and think about the question before recording. For the first two, I could re-record if needed, but for the last two, I only got one shot. I haven't heard back yet, so I marked 'no' for getting an offer.
- Why did you choose your major? (in French)
- Why are you interested in CN? (in French)
- In five years, what do you see yourself doing?
Intern
I had an interview request and spoke with the hiring manager and recruiter for about an hour. The recruiter's tone was a bit abrupt when they asked if I spoke French, which I don't, and it wasn't on my resume or mentioned in the job description, so I didn't foresee it being an issue. About a week later, I got a standard rejection email. I asked for feedback since I'm a student, but the recruiter sent back a generic reply, stating they lacked the time for individual feedback. This experience, as a student job-hunting during the pandemic, really revealed CN's company culture and values. They advertise opportunities for student learning and development, yet refusing to spend a couple of minutes offering constructive feedback, after I dedicated an hour to the interview, and possibly rejecting me for a reason they could have identified earlier (my French language skills), was quite disheartening.
- Do you have fluency or competence in the French language?
