First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Clio.
Development Manager
Interviewing with Clio showed me how much they value hiring "human and high performing" (their words) people. It had a number of steps (both usual and more-than-usual): recruiter screen, then a hiring manager interview with the director of this organization (60 minutes on my technical background and what I was looking for), programming (60 minutes of solving a straightforward problem using my own development environment), system design (60 minutes of designing a system to solve a particular problem on Zoom whiteboarding), a people leadership interview (90 minutes with an HRBP), a culture screen (45 minutes with a senior director about what drives me and why I do what I do), and then finally 60 minutes with the hiring manager again to follow up on questions they had. Though the process was in-depth and I didn't end up accepting their offer, I was incredibly impressed with Clio: their values came out through the whole process, and everyone I spoke to radiated humanity above all else. They were also incredibly accommodating of my timelines due to having another offer in hand.
- Can you share an instance where you had to terminate an employee due to underperformance? Detail the actions you took and your attempts to help them improve.
- Walk me through your technical background and what you're seeking in your next opportunity.
- Solve a straightforward programming problem using your own development environment.
Market Manager
The process was pretty straightforward and the staff were pleasant. However, the job description was a bit misleading, as the role turned out to be mostly cold calling and telemarketing, which wasn't what I was looking for. I felt a bit misled and wish the description had been more accurate.
- What are your 5-year career aspirations?
Development Manager
The initial recruiter call was good and kept me engaged. They seemed to pay attention. Then I had a cultural interview with a peer, who was really professional and nice. I really liked talking to them and got a great vibe about the company, felt like I wanted to work and learn with them. For the next part, they asked for my availability for what was supposed to be a 3.5-hour session. They scheduled 4 interviews totaling 4 hours, at times I explicitly said I couldn't do. One interview was a pair programming exercise where I'd write a console app in a language I chose. Another was a deep technical discussion about a previous project, with strict rules like no presentations and details on the project type. Then there was a 90-minute panel with 3 senior people focused on people leadership. Lastly, a meeting with a VP that seemed to be another cultural check. I ended up withdrawing because I couldn't make the time for everything, and I felt it was pretty rude they scheduled interviews outside my stated availability.
- Can you walk me through your past experiences?
- Could you discuss your approach to people leadership?
