Software Engineering Manager
Had a chat with a recruiter who was super helpful and professional. Then a call with the hiring manager, followed by a system design interview with an engineer, and finished with a leadership interview with an HR partner.
- Describe your approach to managing a project.
Software Engineering Manager
It was a pretty standard process. First, I had a call with HR, then a call with a senior executive at the company, followed by a technical round. I wasn't thrilled with the call I had with the senior exec. They showed no respect and it felt like the interviewer was intentionally trying to make me fail. They made no effort to make the interview comfortable and the 'call' was very one-sided. I've been on both sides of interviews and typically these initial calls involve a lot of discussion and two-way communication, which was completely missing here. They also didn't ask any technical questions for the assessment, even though they say they really value people who understand technology. Honestly, don't set up interviewees for failure; it's just a waste of everyone's time. Try to show some genuine interest.
- Can you discuss your experience with managing people?
- Can you share a typical behavioral question about people management and your previous experiences?
Engineering Manager
It was a long process for such a small company. First, there was a 1-hour technical coding challenge where I had to parse a CSV file and match entries without repetition. Then, a 1-hour session discussing my projects in detail, which felt like a good conversation. After that, a behavioral round with HR and a manager, asking tricky questions designed to find flaws. The manager seemed distracted. Finally, a 1-hour meeting with a senior leader that was a meaningful conversation. I felt like they were looking for reasons not to hire me, despite my good technical performance. They didn't seem to recognize my passion for the work.
- What aspects of being a people manager would you aim to enhance?
- How would you manage changing priorities when requirements are in constant flux?
