Product Design Manager
I really enjoyed the whole hiring process at Clio. I was interviewing elsewhere too, but Clio's organized approach and the friendly, warm, attentive people I met were big reasons I chose them. I always knew where I stood and what came next after each chat. They even sent guides to help me prep for interviews. It was also great to meet folks from different areas, especially seeing many women in senior R&D leadership roles, which made a good impression.
- Can you share examples of how you've worked with colleagues from different departments?
- How do you guide your team in creating a product vision?
- What's your approach to mentoring and fostering career development within your team?
Product Design Manager
Had a good 30 min chat with the recruiter. Then a 1-hour interview with the hiring manager. After that, it was 2 hours of back-to-back interviews: a 1-hour case study presentation with the hiring manager and a peer, followed by a 1-hour panel interview with the director of product and the dev manager. Then, more back-to-back interviews: a 1-hour panel with other peers, and a 30-minute chat with executive leadership. They asked some really good questions, though some were super specific to their company and how I'd deal with situations with zero context, which made them tough to answer. It's a big time commitment for candidates with 5 interviews and 10 people over 5 hours, especially with a presentation to prep. They do say they have trouble hiring, but they sure ask for a lot of time from anyone interested.
- Tell me about how you develop design strategy.
- What impact for users are you most proud of?
- How do you influence stakeholders outside of product management?
Product Design Manager
The interview process kicked off with a 30-minute chat with a talent acquisition specialist, followed by a 1-hour session with the design manager. The final round was a 3-hour marathon involving a triad interview with the directors of product and engineering, a case study presented to the design team, and a leadership interview. Overall, it was an interesting process. While the first two rounds were enjoyable, meeting great people, I had reservations about the third round. I noticed most interviewers (5 out of 6) were men, which unfortunately seemed to set a tone. My suggestions: move the triad interview out of the first slot and separate the case study from the team interview. Also, ensure women are part of the team interview. As a candidate and a potential manager, representation matters. If there aren't enough women in senior roles, it might be time to re-evaluate the hiring process.
- What are your methods for assessing the success of a design team?
- How would you foster psychological safety within your teams?
- Can you describe your approach to mentoring and developing individuals?
