First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Clifford Chance.
Trainee Solicitor
This interview was the final step for the training contract at the firm, coming after the assessment centre. It was with a partner and a senior associate from different departments, and it went for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The first 45 minutes or so involved answering technical questions based on the written assessment we had to do. The last hour was more of a general interview, focusing on competency-based questions. There were some tough questions, but the interviewers were really nice, making it a good experience overall.
- Can you explain your interest in corporate law and specifically in Clifford Chance?
- Could you differentiate between debt and equity finance?
- Under what circumstances would you choose debt financing over equity financing, and vice versa?
Trainee Solicitor
The interview process was very straightforward. It included one associate competency interview and a case study interview with a partner. The HR team was very helpful and reassuring throughout the process. Overall, it was a comprehensive and quick experience, though there was very little time to get accustomed to the interview format.
- What are the key issues that would impact the firm and its clients?

First, there's an application form where you need to write a lot about yourself, your skills, past and experience. It has questions about your career and job, and some softer questions, for instance, asking you to describe a time you were successful or got over a tough situation. If you get through that, you'll do an online verbal reasoning test. My advice is to practice a few beforehand if you can, because it's a different way to approach comprehension questions than usual, and you need to answer really fast. If you pass that test, you're invited for a half-day interview. This includes another verbal reasoning test, a group role-play, analyzing a business question, and an interview with two partners where you'll talk about that business question.
- Can you tell me about your three biggest weaknesses?
- Could you provide a detailed discussion on financial regulation in the UK?
