First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Clifford Chance.
Intern
It was all done virtually. A few days after sending my CV, they emailed me a link to answer questions. I had about a week to complete it. The process involved about 15 seconds to think and one minute to respond in English, and then it automatically moved to the next question. In the end, they told me there were no openings in the department I wanted, but they would keep my application on file.
- Tell me about a current legal news story.
- Why did you want to be at the firm?
- Why were you a good fit?
Intern
The interview process focuses on your motivations and commercial understanding, as well as your competencies. For motivations, we want to see how you embed commercial understanding into your answers. Specifically, we'll ask why CC, why commercial law, where you see yourself in 5 years, and how you'd describe the firm briefly. For competencies and scenario questions, we're looking at your skills and relevant traits. This includes questions like telling us about a time you demonstrated teamwork, or a time your integrity was questioned, or what you'd do first if you were president.
- Can you share an instance where you dealt with a challenging individual?
Intern
So I had an interview today that didn't go as well as I'd hoped. I spent days getting ready and went to this big international law firm really excited, ready to show what I could do and how motivated I was. But right from the start, the vibe felt off. The person interviewing me seemed really distant and not that into what I was saying, making it tough to have a real conversation. Even though I tried to give detailed and relevant answers, it felt like they weren't really listening. The lack of any positive feedback or interest from the interviewer just made things more awkward. I left the firm feeling pretty disappointed and frustrated, knowing my chances of getting hired weren't looking as good as I'd thought.
- Explain civil liability and give a practical example.
- What are the key differences between the US and European legal systems?
- How would you approach an international contract dispute involving multiple jurisdictions?
