Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cleo (United Kingdom).
Product Engineer
The whole process took 4 rounds. The interviewers were nice, professional, and well-prepared, and the recruiter even sent me some prep materials beforehand. First was an introductory call. Then, a technical behavioral interview with two engineers, focusing on my engineering background. After that, a design and pair programming interview, also with two engineers. Finally, a skill and behavioral round with two Engineering Managers. Although the people were great, the ending was frustrating. I was told I'd hear back within 48 hours but ended up waiting a week. Then I was told they weren't moving forward because they decided to change the role's focus to a different type of experience. It was disappointing that this shift wasn't caught earlier, especially after I'd already done all four interviews.
- Tell me about your technical design and domain modeling experiences, specifically concerning designing a vending machine system with requirements about coins, denominations, and change.
- For the pair programming session, please implement the logic to calculate the change to be returned to customers.
Product Engineer
I was first approached by a VP of person, then a recruiter who was very friendly and helpful. There were many rounds of interviews, from phone screening, tech discussion, then technical test, then another technical discussion and pairing sessions. I was told there will be two more rounds so it's a long process.
- Can you share an instance from your professional experience where you intentionally incurred technical debt to accelerate development?
Product Engineer
The interview process was super well-organized and the interviewers were really friendly, answering all my questions honestly, even about negative feedback. It went like this: first, a recruiter call, then a technical discussion, followed by a pair coding session, and finally a behavioral interview. I really liked the pair coding part because it felt like a real work scenario, and I got to prepare beforehand. It's a much better way to do a technical interview than a take-home test. The interviewers did help with questions and finding bugs, but it still felt like an interview. The whole thing was wrapped up in about two weeks, which was great because I was also talking to another company. I had a really good experience and it was a big reason I decided to join.
- Write a program to predict the stock market with 100% accuracy (just kidding, I can't remember any but I need to put something here to submit the review).
