Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cleary Gottlieb.
Summer Vacation Scheme
The interview process involved a technical case study where candidates were placed in a commercial scenario representing a client on a matter. They were tasked with highlighting the contractual terms relevant to the client and developing ideas on how to change them to better suit the client's desires. This was followed by a CV & Competency Interview with two associates, which covered normal interview questions. Finally, there was a negotiation exercise where candidates were given time to read a document and assigned to a group to represent a party to a transaction in negotiations with another party represented by other candidates.
- Can you discuss a recent commercial news story and its potential impact on clients?
Intern
I put in my application online. Then, HR gave me a call to set up a phone interview. After that, I had a roughly 30-minute phone call with managers from my department. Then, I was invited in for a second round, which lasted about an hour in total. I met with department managers one by one. The first manager seemed nice, but the second one was a bit cold and I couldn't figure him out. In the end, I got an offer.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
- Tell me about yourself.
- What's a quote you really like and what's the reason behind it?
Summer Vacation Scheme
Had a video interview with an associate who was a little late. Skype didn't work too well, but given it was during lockdown, I guess that's understandable.
- Can you tell me about your past work experiences?
- What do you know about basic legal matters?
