There were many individual conversations with various team members. It seems that the process could be consolidated easily for the good of their team and the interviewee. HR was communicative throughout the stages. Staff was friendly and talkative.

I had an initial screening with HR, and after I passed that, about a week later, I met with the team for roughly two hours. We discussed scenarios and did a debugging exercise. The company was quick to get back to me. Everyone was really relaxed and open, making it feel more like a casual conversation about my background rather than a high-pressure evaluation. The entire interview process was conducted via Google Meet. It's worth noting they were specifically looking for and hiring an entry-level candidate for an entry-level role.

The interview process involved three stages: first, an HR screening, then a take-home assessment focusing on Python or R programming, followed by an interview with the Hiring Manager. I wasn't selected to move forward because they mentioned needing someone with more extensive python and SQL experience for this level II role. It's strange since SQL experience was listed as a plus, the salary seems low for Chicago, and I know someone with less experience who got hired. Honestly, I feel like I avoided a bad situation.

The phone screen was with one of the recruiters, who was very nice and easy to talk to. He asked questions like: Tell me about yourself. Tell about about technical challenges on a project and how you handled them. Why Civis? Any questions for me? The phone screen also includes technical questions that asked about time complexity, database design, etc. The next step is a coding challenge in which you're sent a link to CTA data (Chicago Transit Authority), which you load into a SQL database of your choosing, then generate aggregates and visualize the data. After that, you have a Google Hangouts interview with 2 staff engineers to review your code and extend it.
