Data Scientist
You'll first need to write a 1000 word personal statement that addresses some key questions they have, and also include your relevant resume info. If they like that, then you'll have a 1 hour online interview. For that interview, you need to give a prepared technical presentation on some data they give you and then answer some general technical questions and also some competency-based questions.
- Can you analyze the data provided regarding the UK's loneliness index?
Data Scientist
Applied for a Data Scientist role, with the department to be decided after passing. The application involved a timed numerical test on the Civil Service Careers website, assessing statistical techniques and probabilities. After passing, I was invited to an interview and told beforehand I'd need to do a presentation. When I got there, I was given a question sheet with 3 choices; I had 30 minutes to pick one and prepare a short 5-minute presentation about the problem to discuss with the interviewers. Afterward, I had a 2-person panel interview with current analysts from different departments in similar statistical/analytical jobs. I gave my presentation and then did a competency-based interview. They said I passed but I'd be on a reserve list for future openings.
- Choose one of the three provided topics and prepare a 5-minute presentation detailing your approach to a data analysis project aimed at resolving the selected issue.
- Could you share an instance where you utilized a statistical analysis technique in your present job?
Data Scientist
It was pretty confusing, not gonna lie. It felt like there were certain 'buzzwords' they were looking for to check off boxes, I guess to make sure it was fair and non-discriminatory, which I think is great. But yeah, it made for a weird interview. You could be having a great chat, but if you said something that was a 'point loser,' you could kinda see them checking off a box, like 'uh oh.'
- Tell me about a challenging problem you solved using code.
