The interview process was very systematic, as is typical for the civil service. First, I had to submit a Statement of Suitability detailing my relevant experience, along with a CV. I ended up having to reformat my CV to fit their portal. Then, I had an online interview due to the pandemic. It was a panel interview with three interviewers where I was asked competency-based questions. These were pretty open-ended, with no specific mention of the role or my experience.

The application process involved answering about 6 competency questions, each limited to 250 words. The interview itself was a panel of 4 people and included a presentation and an exercise. A downside of applying for civil service roles as an external applicant is that you're penalized by starting at the bottom of the salary scale, whereas existing civil servants get a 10% raise. It seems unfair that internal and external applicants don't have the same salary rules, especially since civil servants wouldn't be penalized like this if they applied to the private sector.

I had a panel interview with 4 interviewers. It was online and they asked technical and behavioral questions. There was also a badging test. You can prep based on the job spec, but expect follow-up questions. The interviewers were really nice and supportive.
