First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at City of Toronto.
IT Trainee
I applied through my school and had an online interview with 5 general questions that popped up one by one on the screen. Two people were there: a PM and their manager. They really wanted to confirm that I would definitely come to the office twice a week and that my communication skills were solid.
- What steps would you take to enhance the IT performance within the City.
IT Trainee
We had a WebEx interview that lasted about 25 minutes with the Senior Messaging Specialist and the IT Manager. They asked me questions mostly about soft skills, like how I handle situations, my experiences with project management, and customer interactions. There were no technical questions. They said it would be good to answer clearly and concisely. Oh, and they reminded me to ask about my responsibilities at the end!
- How do you deal with conflicts that come up between colleagues?
- Could you share an experience where a customer was unhappy with your outcome, and how you managed that situation?
- How would you describe your skills regarding teamwork and working independently?
IT Trainee
I talked to 3 people in the Corporate Real Estate Management team. They asked 5 questions which they put in the MS Teams chat. The questions were about business analysis and decision making. They want to know if you know tools like Maximo or SAP.
- How would you handle the task of analyzing 150,000 invoices to check the currencies and pricing?
- What is your approach when a customer asks you to improve an application's performance metrics in Maximo, but only gives you a general instruction?
- If you had to pick two tasks out of these three: giving a product demo, discussing strategy with managers, or cleaning customer data, which two would you choose and explain your reasoning?
