I applied and got invited for analytic testing, which I passed. Then, I was asked to do Excel and Word tests, which I also passed. After that, I had an in-person panel interview with three people who had similar job titles in nearby cities and the HR manager. The interview was very short, only about 10 minutes. It was strange because about half the questions were about my experience with budgets, which wasn't even mentioned in the job description. They asked about budget preparation, management, and analysis. It would have been better if the questions were actually relevant to the job description. It was disappointing to not get a courtesy email after making it to the final 7 out of 100+ applicants.

It started with a written exam, which was harder than typical civil service tests. The day after the test, I got an email inviting me to an oral interview. They asked us to prepare a mock budget memo to check our writing. The oral interview had 4 panelists from other cities, all women. I think they invited 10-15 candidates for this stage. They asked 4-5 prepared questions, some about job experience and others were situational to see how we'd handle pressure. None tested intellectual ability. I guess the panelists were from outside the city to avoid conflicts of interest, but they seemed disinterested and didn't really look at the mock budget memo I submitted. The panelists were similar in level to the job, no senior management. They said they'd let me know next week if I moved forward. I got another offer with a faster process. The city of Newport Beach isn't bad, but they don't seem efficient with how long and how many people they use to fill one spot.

So the whole thing takes like 6 weeks or more. First, you gotta apply on governmentjobs.com. If you meet the basic stuff, they'll call you for a written exam with everyone else. If you pass that, which they tell you fast, they'll invite you to a panel interview at the Newport Beach City Hall. They pick you based on how you did on both the written test and the interview.

The hiring process starts online. You can find openings on governmentjobs.com or the city's website. If they contact you, you'll go to city hall for an exam on customer service and situational questions. If you pass, you'll have interviews, starting with a panel at city hall. If you pass that, you'll interview with the specific facility you're being placed in. Aim for a great first interview!
