The interview process was straightforward. There were three levels of tests: first, a typing test. Second, a test on Excel and Microsoft knowledge. And third, general accounting knowledge questions covering GAAP knowledge, payroll and administration, taxation calculations, Accounts payable, Accounts receivable, and some calculations.

I got to the company's reception area ten minutes early, feeling ready and excited to make a good impression. The office looked modern and stylish—a place I figured would have a progressive, friendly vibe. The hiring manager called me into the interview room a few minutes later. She sat behind a big desk and gave me a brief introduction, which felt a bit abrupt. Right from the start, it felt like something wasn't quite right. I left feeling flustered. I had done all my homework, practiced my answers, and researched the company. But, I never really got a chance to talk about my qualifications or how I'd fit in. The interviewer seemed more interested in confirming what she already thought. Walking away, I felt rattled.

The entire interview process took about 3 weeks. There was only one interview round that lasted around 40 minutes, after which I received a job offer. I did have to submit three references, and they were sent a detailed form to fill out.

So, the interview process had about 7 questions that touched on teamwork, leadership, performance management, diversity and inclusion, and handling tricky situations in a sensitive environment. After the interviews, a couple of folks were shortlisted for a test that required knowing a lot about City of Hamilton initiatives, which seemed tough since there isn't much public info. This test was all about handling discrimination issues and helping the City Manager with those. The City didn't tell anyone the results until I followed up a month later. Turns out, they picked an internal candidate because it would be an easier transition for the Director. It's funny because even though the interview and test were heavy on racism and lived experience in D&I, they hired a Caucasian person for the job, and the Director is also Caucasian.
