I applied for a few Pupil Support Assistant roles via Myjobscotland, which is where you find education jobs in Scotland. The application required details on experience and qualifications, plus a timeline of my history. You can also upload a CV, Cover Letter, and links. Usually, schools either interview directly or have an initial chat with an Edinburgh Council recruiter followed by a school interview. I interviewed straight with the school, so I don't know about the council part. The school's Business Manager emailed me the day after my application to invite me for an interview the next week. They did in-person interviews on one day with 15-minute slots. I asked if I could do it online, and they were fine with that, so definitely ask if you need to! The interview felt really relaxed. The Deputy Head and another PSA interviewed me for about 10 minutes. They introduced themselves and explained the interview structure, then asked me to give a brief introduction and talk through my experience and skills. They also asked specific questions about the role. I had my interview in the morning and got a job offer call that same evening! Later, I got a welcome email from the Business Manager and a heads-up about a conditional offer email from Council HR, which came the next week. Once I accepted, I had to complete pre-employment checks (right to work, address proof, PVG, Criminal Conviction Declaration, and references) before getting my unconditional offer and starting.

The interview process was set up well and was a good experience overall. The interviewers were kind and respectful. It was nice to have the opportunity to talk about experience gained in other employments. I was given time to respond in different scenarios and it was useful to have things printed so I could make sure I would cover all the questions.

It was an informal interview and they didn't share much about the format beforehand. The communication was pretty lacking throughout the entire process. This was especially disappointing considering what the role is about.

It was a face to face interview at the school with two members of the senior leadership team. The interview lasted about 30 to 40 minutes. They gave me the questions 10 minutes before to look over, which was really helpful.
