First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at City of Columbus (Ohio).
Intern
The whole process was super nice. People were friendly, the vibe was good for working, and it was in a great spot. Everyone was polite, helpful, and supportive. They asked about my work history and threw in some basic questions.
- Could you demonstrate using Bloomberg for financial report analysis?
Assistant Manager
The interview kicks off with a phone chat to check availability and understand your interest in working with the city. Following that, you'll face a panel from the department who will ask you questions focusing on your problem-solving and programming abilities.
- Can you describe a conflict you caused at work and how you resolved it?
Planner
The interview included two planning supervisors and an HR rep. They asked questions about my experience, work style, and how I'd handle job duties. Near the end, the HR rep gave me a handout with benefits and pay details, asking me to review it and ask any questions. It was a bit unusual for a first interview to discuss these topics. The starting pay was also different from the advertised rate, which was a bit awkward (the application could have stated the starting rate more clearly). They also allowed time for any questions I had about the position.
- Can you describe the steps you would take to handle a resident who is upset about a zoning decision?
Forensic Scientist
First, you'll have a written questionnaire to complete. Then, an on-site polygraph test, followed by interviews with HR, Supervisors, and Managers. It's really important to show you're a person of good character and understand scientific principles well. Seriously, don't lie during the polygraph, or you're out.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
- Are you a person of good character?
- Do you have a good understanding of scientific principles?
