It was a good interview process, everything flowed nicely. Just one round, a panel interview where I met with the procurement team and some leaders. We talked about how procurement works, rules and regulations, and how to handle problems specifically when working with public sector contracts.

So they emailed me about the interview and gave me three dates to pick from. I picked one and then half an hour before it started, they sent a Word doc with 12 questions. I was supposed to prep using those, and they ended up asking them. I didn't really have enough time to go through them all though. The interview itself was pretty chill, with four interviewers. After introductions, they had me introduce myself, which was a good moment. Then they just asked the questions from the doc.

The interview process was long, which is typical for government jobs, and it was really badly organized. Over three months, I had three panel interviews with the City and they never got back to me after the third one. The interview panel gave me timelines for what was supposed to happen next, but each step was delayed by about two to three weeks. During one of the interviews, one panelist made some really troubling comments about how Communities of Color aren't as interested in environmental issues. I asked questions about the City and Division's work culture in each of the three interviews. One of the supervisors on the panel jumped in to answer these questions each time and didn't let any of the other staff speak, which felt like a big red flag. I also asked about workload and performance expectations. Responses included comments like, "the City has lean staff" and "City Council just funded this position, so the expectations are high," suggesting a heavy workload. Because of the poor communication and the red flags throughout this whole process, I won't be applying for any more jobs with the City.

I applied online and got an interview invite pretty quick, before the job post closed. The interview was scheduled a few weeks later and took place at Bellevue's City Hall. It was a short one, only about 20 minutes, with two interviewers. They asked me to bring a printed portfolio, which is kinda weird for design nowadays; I bet they didn't even look at my online one.
