First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at City Electric Supply.
UX/UI Designer
The entire hiring process spanned about a month. It kicked off with a chat with a recruiter, then moved to a combined telephone and video call with the Hiring Manager and a Senior Designer. This was a straightforward two-stage interview process.
- Can you share details about your previous work experience?
- Which design tools are part of your toolkit?
- Could you present and discuss your portfolio?
Security Awareness Specialist
I had an initial chat with the recruiter at CES, and it went really well. The questions were pretty straightforward because I have a lot of experience in this area. They mentioned the next step was an interview with the hiring manager and I'd hear back in a few days to schedule it. But then, nothing. I got totally ghosted by the recruiter and never heard back, even after I followed up a few times.
- Can you tell me about your experience in managing security awareness training programs?
Senior QA Engineer
I was contacted by a recruiter to set up an initial screening call. The link they sent in the email didn't work. After I let them know, they asked for my availability and sent a direct link for a Teams video chat, even though they mentioned they didn't want to be on camera. Strangely, I never received a formal meeting invitation. On the day of the scheduled call, I completely forgot about it because I didn't get any reminders and was busy with work. I was only reminded when I received an email from CES about a demographic survey, which I suspect the recruiter sent. I managed to join the call, but no one else was there. I also sent an email right away, apologizing for forgetting, but got no reply. I waited for about six minutes before leaving the call and sent another email detailing exactly when I had joined and left. Only then did the recruiter respond, stating they were on the call for five minutes and left because they needed the full 30 minutes. They offered to reschedule, but after I replied and followed up multiple times, they ghosted me. After a week of no contact, I decided to withdraw my application. While I've seen some of these issues before with recruiters, I've never encountered one person making so many mistakes. It's a new low.
- Could you let me know what times work best for you?
Covid Response Supervisor
Applied on indeed and a few days later had a video interview with a recruiter from a 3rd party company. She then scheduled an interview with someone at City Electric/Labora for the following week. The City Electric employee was significantly late, citing he lost track of time talking to his boss. The interview questions were pretty general, like 'tell me about your last position' and 'why did you choose to apply for this position?'. These kinds of questions are expected for a low-skill job like this that doesn't require many qualifications or skills. I was shocked that I was apparently towards the 'end of the interview process' for the week, and that they might be interviewing over a dozen candidates for this low, entry-level position with a 6-month contract. The whole process, including the interviewer being late, may have lasted about 45 minutes. I answered all the questions correctly and felt the interview went very well. I later received an automated rejection response from indeed a few days later. I was also told there might be up to 4 rounds of interviews for the position, which surprised me given it's a low-skill, low-moderate pay job. I was surprisingly unhappy after the whole process, and I've been through a lot of interviews before.
