Senior Product Manager
I interviewed for a Senior Product Manager role at Citrine Informatics. The job description was a bit misleading, saying materials/chemicals experience was a bonus but really they wanted cloud, databases, and data management expertise. The process ended halfway through the 8 rounds without a deep dive into my background. The second interview was just one question: "describe a process of coming up with a new cooking recipe for chefs" – totally unrelated to the PM role or job description. It felt like they weren't interested in my PM experience or the listed skills. This isn't how it's usually done in the industry, which involves market research, SDLC, and team collaboration. The interview process lacked structure and transparency. There was no initial screening call with HR/TA. They said the presentation prep would take max 2 hours, but it was way more, and the window to complete it was tiny. They ended up favoring someone with a research background, which wasn't in the JD and really limits the candidate pool. They told me they wanted someone to take over the interviewer's role, who has a research background. It's ironic because they mentioned their CEO's interview experience where he was asked "how many barbers are in Raleigh", implying they're more interested in putting people through a wringer than assessing actual contribution. Yet, they ask questions like devising a cooking recipe. I also asked about their financial stability given the 2023 layoffs and subsequent funding rounds, but the answers were vague. When I asked why they were hiring after layoffs and the current employee count, I got unclear responses. It seems like a startup struggling with growth. They also asked if I was fully Covid vaccinated because they are a federal contractor, which I found odd for a remote role in Fall 2023. Federal contracts have slim margins, which might explain the issues. The whole experience was marked by unclear communication, a misrepresented JD, and concerns about company stability, especially with government contracts. I'd advise doing your homework on the role and finances before applying. Many AI companies aren't laying off staff, which says a lot. Honestly, don't apply.
- Can you explain what your company does and its revenue model?
- Could you describe the team structure you were part of and outline your specific role and duties?
- What was the customer problem you aimed to address?
Product Manager
The interview process is really thorough and deliberate, not rushed at all, even with how crazy the job market is right now. You don't feel any pressure. Everyone you talk to genuinely wants what's best for you and the company. The whole process is set up to see if you're a good fit and to give you a feel for what it's like working with the team.
- Interview rounds involve numerous structured questions designed to elicit your experiences and showcase your approach to problem-solving, critical thinking, and your specific area of expertise. It's important to provide concrete examples and be precise!
Product Manager
So I had this interview process, and honestly, it wasn't great. It started with a standard email from the recruiter asking about my salary expectations, where I wanted to work, if I needed visa sponsorship, and about the COVID vaccine. Then, I talked to the hiring manager, which seemed okay. But then they sent me a 'challenge invite' which was a 90-minute presentation with Q&A, and then another 4 hours of interviews after they looked at my slides. Felt like a lot.
- Could you share your salary expectations?
- What location are you interested in?
- Are you in need of visa sponsorship?
