Based on past reviews and a friend's experience, I expected a non-technical phone interview, a technical challenge, and an on-site. However, for this specific role, my phone interview was a mix, 50% non-technical and 50% technical. I felt like I didn't answer some questions well, and also felt interrupted. The interview was only 30 minutes, so questions felt rushed, though we did spend a lot of time on one technical question because I elaborated too much. The behavioral questions were pretty standard, almost like they were being read from a list. My friend had a different interviewer for a similar role a while back and said their experience was better, and it really depends on the interviewer. I think they picked a good interviewer for me, but the interview could have gone smoother.

After a quick chat with the recruiter and hiring manager, I got a take-home task. It involved about two weeks of digging into data with around 100 features and 10 labels to predict. I had to build a scikit-learn object from scratch. After training a model and writing the object in an object-oriented way, I got an automatic rejection with no feedback, despite spending two weeks on it. The criteria for evaluation were unclear and subjective. As a mid-level data scientist who's passed technical screens elsewhere, I feel companies like this don't show much commitment to candidates. These assignments are a waste of time and don't really improve skills. It's basically a project, and I wouldn't put in two weeks without pay. I'd tell other good candidates to skip the take-home and look at companies that don't have such demanding work.
