Account Executive
I applied on LinkedIn and got an email from the Sales Manager for a phone interview. He didn't have my resume handy, which was unprofessional, and asked me to go through my entire resume on the phone. I usually just give a summary, but this time I had to give an in-depth rundown of each position. He asked the same questions in different ways and wanted different answers, asking variations of 'Why sales' at least three times. The interview flow was off. He asked if I had questions, which usually ends it, then kept asking random resume things and same questions again. I knew I wouldn't get another interview, but I sent a thank you email anyway. Never heard back, which is annoying because I wish companies would at least send a generic rejection email. It's tough when people take sick time off for interviews and then get ghosted.

Reporter
It began with a quick 20-minute phone chat. After that, there were in-person interviews that ran over two hours. You'd first meet some team members, then a digital editor (though in my case, someone else showed up because the editor forgot about me), and finally a senior editor. This might differ based on the specific job you're applying for. My interview felt really relaxed, maybe because of the day, and it seemed like some interviewers hadn't even reviewed my resume. They didn't ask many questions and didn't seem very interested in getting to know me or my skills. For the second part, the person I was supposed to meet wasn't there, so I walked into an empty room. The whole thing felt a bit unprofessional, and the younger staff could probably use some training on interviewing and how to act when showing candidates around.

Account Manager
I interviewed first with the director then was called back for a second interview for the Account Manager position. I followed up a couple weeks after because I did not hear anything back and was told the position was being edited and changes were being made to the description to fit more of what they needed. HR then told me the position would be reposted and apply to future openings. It was very confusing and unprofessional since I've wasted so many weeks interviewing with this company. Very disappointing.
- What are your strategies for managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously?
Intern
Had a phone interview that was set up ahead of time via email, so it wasn't a surprise call. A group of five people interviewed me. We talked about my journalism background, and I had to give specific examples. Since it's a specialized publication, it's beneficial to know a bit about higher education; at the very least, check out five or six recent articles on their site. There was also a writing task involved.
- In general journalism or higher education news, what's a weakness you have?
