First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Christopher Newport University.
Coordinator
It was pretty laid back, with 3 people in the room. They asked some basic questions, like about strengths and weaknesses, and then some scenario questions. They mentioned that the hiring decision wasn't theirs, but HR's.
- Can you tell me about your greatest strength and explain why?
Software Developer
They ask basic programming questions in C, so prepare all loop concept questions and how to get user input. There is no aptitude round in this company, you can easily crack the coding round. The advanced coding round is a little difficult.
- Questions about for loops and how to get user input.
Associate Project Manager
The interview process was irrelevant. Apparently, if you're not a CNU graduate, you won't be hired, regardless of your qualifications. This is a known strategy to boost their graduation success stats. Several current employees told me this before I even started, and I spent weeks hoping for real consideration. I even had to prepare a presentation for the whole department, knowing I was just a formality. This apparently happens a lot, so at least you know not to get your hopes up.
- What makes you want to work for this company?
Deputy Chief of Auxiliary Operations
The hiring manager reached out to me directly via email to schedule a phone interview. Before that, HR sent a formal letter confirming they got my application. When the interview day came, the hiring manager called exactly when we said they would. It was a panel interview with four people: the hiring manager, their supervisor, and two people who would report to the person in the job I was interviewing for. They asked questions in a round robin style. After that, I was invited for an on-campus interview two weeks later, but unfortunately, the school didn't have the funds to cover my travel from the West Coast. My overall feeling is that CNU would have been a great place to work with a good environment.
- How would you enforce a policy you disagreed with?
