First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
Associate Director of Education
The interview process involved a phone screen, a zoom interview, and then an in-person interview with several key people: the head of HR, the head of Education, and the executive director. It was a pretty smooth and quick process. Communication initially was via Spotify, but they have since brought in new HR personnel who are fantastic.
- Tell me about your strengths.
- What areas are you currently developing?
Marketing
The interview process was disorganized and the interviewers were late. They asked about my background as if they hadn't reviewed my resume. When I inquired about their current marketing plan and how specific projects aligned with it, they couldn't provide an answer, revealing they don't actually have a marketing plan, which is surprising for a company with over $70 million in annual revenue. Following this, they administered a coding test using a software program that is not and has never been used by the company. The interviewers' demeanor was aggressive and condescending. Despite these red flags, I felt compelled to continue due to my urgent need for employment.
- What qualifications do you possess that make you a suitable candidate for this role?
Front of House
About a week after sending in my resume, I got an email to schedule the interview. I met with the hiring manager in the lobby seating area by the windows. It was out of the main traffic area but not in an office, so it was pretty casual and nice. I had a mutual friend refer me, so maybe that made it feel more relaxed. The hiring manager seemed friendly and funny, and really prepared. He knew my resume well, which made the questions flow really smoothly.
- Could you please name your two best qualities?
- And what would you say are your two worst qualities?
- How do you think your friends would describe you?
Call Center Associate
I had a really thorough phone call with the Call Center Management first, and then they had me come in for a face-to-face interview. This second interview was also VERY thorough, which surprised me a bit since it's a part-time call center job. Both interviews were nice and conversational, I actually enjoyed them and didn't feel put on the spot. I think they were mainly checking if I was smart and assertive, and also confirming that I really only wanted a part-time job, as they asked me more than once about that. Since I didn't have previous call center experience, they asked me some questions to gauge my comfort level with talking to people on the phone.
