First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Chemonics International.
Director
It was a round robin of questions with a panel of staff. I had the opportunity to ask questions at the end. The questions often focus on asking me to describe a situation or challenge I’ve had in prior roles.
- Can you tell me about a time you faced a challenge with cross-cultural communication?
Director
After I applied online, a recruiter reached out to me. My first interview was with her, and she asked pretty basic intake questions. If you passed that, you'd go on to a panel interview with 3 managers, one of whom would be your direct supervisor. During the interview, I was the only one with my camera on. They all read from a script of very technical questions and only wanted yes/no answers. When I tried to give examples of my work, they cut me off to stay on schedule with their 3 pages of questions. It was incredibly dull, and I felt like a survey or a written test would have been sufficient if they were only interested in my SQL abilities. I wanted to point out that even though the role involved technical tasks, it was a Director position, so managing people and influencing others was a huge part of it. After that round, I moved to the final interview with the VP, which was a really nice chat and I felt good about my chances. I got the offer two weeks later via email from the recruiter, which included the salary. I asked about maternity leave because I'm pregnant. The recruiter sent the policy over, but then tried to unsend the email shortly after. Then she called to say the position was eliminated. I was bummed, but I had other offers and took it as a sign. The other companies were willing to discuss maternity leave, and the one I accepted covered me for 15 paid weeks after I started. I liked my recruiter; she was professional and empathetic, but I suspect the hiring manager was the issue. My advice to pregnant candidates or women interviewing for technical, internal roles: think twice before applying.
- Are you familiar with Microsoft 360?
Director
After initially being hired as a consultant, I was offered a full-time position after a few months. My CV was sent to a VP acquaintance, who then forwarded it to relevant people. I interviewed with a panel of three people as part of the consultant interview process. After working in-house for a few months, I was offered full-time employment with a good salary. This offer was dependent on a subsequent interview with the President and Executive VP, which was informal and friendly. Chemonics has a strong culture that supports staff development, career advancement, and respect for its employees.
- In your opinion, what are the most critical elements of the Director role?
