Behavioral Technical Coding

I went through an interview process with Checkout.com for a Software Engineer role. It involved an HR touchpoint, followed by technical interviews and a take-home coding challenge focused on their payment gateway API. The take-home assignment's instructions stressed simplicity and meeting requirements, which I aimed for. During the technical interviews, I discussed my design decisions and suggested enhancements like health checks and better logging, which the interviewers found reasonable. Despite this, I wasn't selected as they were looking for more advanced solutions in those areas. The team was professional, but maybe future candidates would appreciate more clarity on the expected depth beyond the basic requirements.

Behavioral Technical Coding

The interview had 2 main stages. The first was with the hiring manager, covering solid principles, unit & integration testing, and cloud/devops. It felt more like a collaborative discussion. The second stage was with a senior engineer, involving a pair programming task where I had to implement a new endpoint in a basic asp.net web api. Unfortunately, I didn't complete the task within the time limit and didn't receive specific feedback on why I failed. My advice based on this experience is to prioritize completing the coding task above all else, and don't get caught up in lengthy discussions. If possible, it might be beneficial to complete the task beforehand to ensure you can finish it quickly during the interview. Treat this round as a task completion challenge, not a back-and-forth discussion.

Technical Coding Presentation

My interview experience with Checkout was really good. They were super supportive from the beginning and explained everything well. First, I talked with their talent acquisition team. Then, I had a technical interview, and after that, a live coding test. They sent me the test beforehand so I could get my setup and basic code ready. In the live coding session, I had to explain what I understood about the project and finish the task. The interviewers were all really professional and helpful through every step. Even though I didn't get the job in the end, I liked the experience much better than with some other companies. They didn't make me wait around. They got back to me quickly with feedback and what was next. That kind of speed is a big deal for candidates. I got clear feedback at the end explaining why they made their decision. Overall, Checkout was professional and supportive all the way.
