The hiring manager didn't even know what I was supposed to be interviewing for and mistakenly interviewed me for the wrong position. The recruiter apparently put my application for two positions, one of which I did not apply for. Once the confusion was realized at the end of the interview the hiring manager told me that the position I applied for had just been filled.

So there were three interviews: first, an HR interview. Then, a Mechanical Engineering Technical Interview. Lastly, a Managerial Introduction Interview. The first and last ones were pretty straightforward. The technical one was mainly about fundamentals and some conceptual stuff related to the industry, like smaller manufacturing, tolerancing, and materials.

So the recruiter was super unprofessional and rude, and honestly didn't seem to know anything about the job or the team. I tried to get a feel for what the job actually entails, like the daily tasks, how the team is set up, and what they're aiming for down the line. But the recruiter just kept saying it's a 'typical FP&A role,' which is so unhelpful. They also mentioned they'd never worked with the team, so they couldn't give me any info on them. Then they got annoyed that I even applied because I was asking about specifics, saying it's a general role where I'd 'do everything.' Seriously, they were super vague, just repeated the job description, and gave no real insights. It really felt like they had no clue what they were looking for. Their whole attitude and way of speaking were really off-putting and just plain rude. My advice would be to make sure recruiters actually know about the roles and teams they're hiring for, and also to be way more respectful to candidates.

I applied and had a quick recruiter chat. Then, a hiring manager call, followed by an onsite interview with the hiring manager and another team member. The team seemed sharp, but they appear to be having some trouble filling roles. I ended up declining their offer because the total compensation wasn't comparable to my current role and was less than what they advertised online. Also, the non-compete clause in their employment contract is problematic as it seems to conflict with California law. They might still be ironing out some details.
