First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Central Michigan University.
Assistant Director
So I had this virtual interview first, it was a panel of four people, and they hit me with behavioral questions. Then, I moved on to the second and final round, which was a data analysis task. The deal was I had to get data on CMU charter schools from the Michigan school website, then clean it up, do some analysis, and make some cool visualizations. After that, I had to present what I found in person. They seemed pretty happy with my work after the presentation, but in the end, I didn't get the job. When I asked why, they said I needed to get the data's context better, which would have made my visuals and discussion even stronger. Honestly, I think I nailed the analysis part. But, they really should check if someone can actually do the analysis, get the data's context, and make visualizations. Maybe they should also train new people since they might not know much about the schools or the data. It's on them to see if someone can do the job right. This whole thing with CMU Charter was one of the worst interview experiences I've had.
- We need to present a data analysis task in person.
Student Assistant
The interview process generally includes a few steps. It starts with a quick phone chat to see if you're basically qualified. Then, you'll likely do some technical tests to check your skills. After that, there are panel interviews with the team to see if you'd fit in. Finally, there are HR meetings to go over what's expected, the work environment, and any details.
- How do you plan to balance this job with your student responsibilities?
Full Stack Developer
It was pretty standard. Started with a call from HR, then moved on to a panel interview where I spoke with 5 people. They asked about my past work, what I know now, and how I handle leadership stuff. The interview was done over Teams.
- Can you share an instance where you had to work with a team with varied technical expertise to finish a project, detailing the challenges and your solutions?
- Please describe a time you resolved a conflict within a development team, including your method and the result.
- Have you taken on the role of mentoring a junior developer before?
Research Assistant
They got back with me quickly to set up an interview and planned well around my schedule. Questions were very basic and covered my previous similar experience to the job I would be working as well as any other skills I had related to the job. They were very enthusiastic and descriptive about what I would be doing, describing my responsibilities as well as any other types of projects I would be working on.
- Regarding your decision to return to education, what prompted that?
- Can you discuss your prior experience that aligns with this position?
- What additional skills do you possess that are relevant to this role?
