You submit your federal resume for a student trainee opening. Then, the hiring manager at CMS forwards your info to different departments that are hiring. The interviews vary a lot by department; some are easygoing, while others might be more technical. When they interview student trainees, they're usually nice and don't expect a ton, but you should still really know how you can help and why you want to work with their team.

I applied through USAJOBS, and it took about 4 months from application submission to the interview call. After applying, I got an automated email for an assessment. Then I waited, got referred, and after a few more months, the director reached out about my interest in the role. I accepted, and then had a panel interview covering my background, interests, and fit. Next, I had to do a writing assessment. The last step was a final interview to discuss that assessment and my thoughts. The process was enjoyable, though the wait times were long.

There were 3 interviews total, each for a different position or office. They mentioned that multiple offices might reach out if they like your resume. The first was just a phone interview, and I basically got the job offer right then. The second one was in person, lasted about 20 minutes, and had really easy, simple questions. The people were very nice. The third interview was also in person, lasting around 10-15 minutes. They mostly just talked to me about the job and didn't ask many questions. I got offered the position the same day. All the interviews felt pretty low pressure.
