Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Center for Urban Community Service (CUCS).
Case Manager
We started with a quick phone call to check what you put on your application. They just wanted to confirm you have a driver's license and are cool with driving all over NYC. After that, I had a Zoom chat with two supervisors, and then another interview with two *different* supervisors. The whole thing was pretty fast and straightforward.
- Can you tell me about your background?
- How would you approach difficult scenarios you might encounter while working?
- What would be your course of action if a client expressed suicidal thoughts?
Case Manager
The hiring process is pretty fast-paced because they're always understaffed. It's important to show you can handle a caseload of 10 or more, adapt when there aren't enough staff, know how to write up clinical notes, and, crucially, are culturally aware to work with diverse populations dealing with mental health and substance use issues. For caseworker roles, you can typically expect two interview rounds.
- Tell me about your experience working with individuals who have mental health challenges.
- How would you approach managing a caseload of at least 10 clients?
- What strategies do you employ when faced with staff shortages?
Case Manager
It starts with a phone screening that can be pretty long, up to an hour. If they want you to come in for a face-to-face, there will be two supervisors and you'll have to take a written test and a typing test. You might also have a second group interview. If you don't get asked back, you didn't get the job.
- Standard social service-related questions were asked, alongside some role-playing scenarios.
