Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Center for Urban Community Service (CUCS).
Social Worker
After submitting an online application, I had an onsite meeting with the hiring manager. Then I filled out a paper application. The interview was thorough but respectful. Following that, there was a typing test to assess word speed and a task to type a sample professional letter.
- In situations of client conflict escalating to verbal or physical altercations, what is your approach to handling them?
- Are you familiar with or have you used medication monitoring systems?
Social Worker
I got a call for a first interview that was pretty straightforward. It had standard interview questions like, 'tell me about your schooling, your past work experiences, and your motivation for joining our team?' After that, they checked my references and set up a second interview. Then, I spoke with the head of the department who asked more in-depth questions that felt like a test. For example, she asked about anxiety medications and symptoms of various mental illnesses. I sent a thank you note afterwards, but heard nothing back. I followed up after a week to get an update, and they said they were still making a decision. Another week passed, and I followed up again. They finally responded to let me know they had hired someone else.
- What are the symptoms associated with Schizophrenia?
Social Worker
It was a phone call and then two in-person interviews. I had to do a typing test to check my speed and if I made grammatical errors. It was easy for me. I met my supervisor first, and then the Program Director for the second interview.
- Tell me about a lesson learned during your social work internships.
