Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cengage.
Software Engineer
I went through 4 rounds of interviews. First, a phone screening with the recruiter. Then, a video interview with HR and other team members. After that, a technical interview with the team manager, which included 2 coding questions. Finally, a video interview with the whole team, where they asked a mix of behavioral and technical questions.
- Were you asked to solve easy coding problems using Test-Driven Development?
Software Engineer
The interview process was great, starting with a chat with the hiring manager (who I got connected with through an external recruiter). We talked about my past projects, my tech stack experience, my opinions, and what I was looking for. Then, I had an on-site where I met some team members. They had me work through a couple of coding problems in an IDE on their computer. After that, they asked me some of their own questions, and I got to ask mine.
- How do you handle state management in React applications?
Software Engineer
I had a technical phone interview with one of the managers. The call was scheduled for 11:00 a.m., but technical difficulties delayed the start by 20 minutes. We then proceeded by screen sharing, and I was given two problems to solve. I solved the first one, but couldn't finish the second on time. The interviewer suggested I email it to him, which I did. The experience was terrible because I never heard back, not even with an explanation. I had to call the company myself later to inquire, and was told it was too early to reach the manager.
- solve two problems
- solve the first problem
- solve the second problem
