Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cengage.
Marketing
The first call with the recruiter was very short, under ten minutes. It felt like they weren't serious about moving forward. Then I had an hour-long conversation with the hiring manager for the next stage. After that, the recruiter stopped responding to my follow-up attempts. I found the experience disrespectful.
- How do you handle prioritizing tasks on your to-do list?
Marketing Assistant
I sent in my application a few weeks back and then got an email to do a phone interview. It seemed to go pretty well, and the interviewer asked me about prior experiences working with teams and general details about the job itself. The role involves overseeing a lot of the work of the teams around me. I asked about what comes next, and he mentioned I should hear from him later that week by phone or email. He had a packed schedule with other phone interviews, but he indicated ours went exceptionally well and gave me the impression I might get good news on Friday. However, I later got an email stating they've decided not to fill this position anymore due to updated business needs. It's a bummer because the company seemed like a great place to learn a lot.
- Regarding salary, what are you looking for?
- He asked about my salary expectations, and I shared my previous max earning, noting my flexibility. He mentioned his planned salary would be within that range and likely acceptable to me, though he didn't state a specific figure.
Marketing
I arranged a phone interview through email. An HR intern emailed me to set it up. Then, I had a phone interview with the Marketing Director. It lasted about 20 minutes, and afterward, she mentioned an HR person would contact me about the outcome. About a week later, I received an email informing me that I didn't get the job.
- Could you explain your interest in the Education field?
- Can you share some marketing examples, either positive or negative, that you've observed?
- How do you manage your organizational tasks?
