Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cengage.

The interview process took over a month and had 4-5 stages. For a low-paying sales job, it was a really long process. Most reps only stay for a year and spend a significant chunk of that time just interviewing. They even make candidates go out in the field to do the basic job duties without supervision. I actually skipped this part (I basically copied someone else's project that I found online) and still got the job.
- What is your motivation for wanting to be a sales representative?

The interview process was a bit long and time consuming, taking about 6 weeks and involving several steps. It started with an initial HR phone interview for screening. After a few weeks, there was a phone interview with the regional hiring manager. Then, another wait of a few weeks, followed by a one-on-one meeting with the hiring manager where standard questions about past experience were asked. If successful, a take-home assignment was given with a tight deadline of three days. This assignment had two parts: spending a full day on a campus (not the applicant's alma mater) and writing a report, and learning an online product to build a presentation around a given scenario. The campus visit part was tedious, especially since it was between semesters and required help from professors. Learning the online product was easier with help from a professor who used it. The final interview included the regional VP unexpectedly. They asked questions back and forth, requiring defense of the campus report and the product presentation. A background check had already started between the last two interviews. The offer came within a few days after the final interview. The process felt like a 'get-this-done-right-now' situation, likely causing many applicants to drop out due to the demanding workload and short timeframe. They seem to be looking for a very specific candidate.
- What are your thoughts on the current involvement of technology?

This was the most in-depth interview process I've experienced. It started with a phone interview, followed by an in-person meeting with the District Manager and their superior. Then, there was a campus project, after which I had another in-person interview with the DM and two team members, including a digital demo. This was then followed by a phone call with a director and a final phone call with the SVP.
- Can you describe how success is evaluated in your current role?
