I submitted my application which included a cover letter, resume, and a link to my writing portfolio. The HR representative was very courteous and reached out via email to schedule interview times. After I provided my availability, she informed me that the hiring manager required me to complete a couple of writing assessments. This was unexpected as the job posting did not mention any writing tests. As a freelance writer, I generally avoid such requirements due to past negative experiences where I dedicated significant time to sample projects only to be ignored after submission. Unfortunately, this situation followed a similar pattern: I finished the two 'tests' (which involved straightforward tasks like copy editing and suggesting improvements for an email and a flyer), and then received no further communication from the HR contact.

Behavioral

My initial interaction with the recruiter was a bit strange. They didn't share much detail about the role but asked about my knowledge of Cengage. The next interview was with the hiring manager, and it was a really bad experience. She appeared to have just woken up for our video call, with her dog wandering around. She wasn't friendly, lacked professionalism, and seemed unhappy in her job. She didn't try to interest me in the company or the position. After waiting about three weeks and following up multiple times, I got a rejection email. I strongly advise anyone considering applying to Cengage to think twice. Based on other reviews, their interview process is poor, and they treat candidates terribly. Seriously, avoid this company. I'm actually glad I didn't get the job because I don't want to be as miserable as that hiring manager was.

I was emailed by the recruiter and then had a phone screen. The next week I interviewed in person with the director, which was friendly and professional. The week after that, I had a second interview focusing on skills, teamwork, and project management. The whole time, everyone was really helpful and professional, and communication was great. My recruiter was always available and kept me updated. I got an offer and accepted it.
