Graduate
The assessment centre was about 6 hours long, with nice assessors and HR staff present throughout the whole virtual AC. It started with a virtual lobby room to meet HR and other candidates, followed by a brief introduction and screen-sharing check. Then there was a company presentation about life at Babcock and the industry. The group task involved running a stem event, choosing an initiative, and presenting the idea. After a 20-25 min break, there was a 1-hour interview and personal presentation slot. The presentation was a 10-minute talk on a technical topic like a university project. The interview was standard but relaxed, with interviewers asking technical questions and guiding candidates to the correct answer. They seemed genuinely invested in the candidates' fit for the role. A Q&A session with current grads followed, and finally, a virtual lobby room for goodbyes and final questions. Babcocks process is quite straightforward, mainly involving an application form and a blended assessment, leading directly to the AC, with no apparent video interview stage, making shortlisting criteria unclear.
- Can you explain the hierarchy of controls?
Mechanical Engineer
The interview process was a 2-day assessment centre. It included a group discussion on non-engineering topics, a group problem-solving challenge, a short exam on general engineering knowledge, and a written exercise where I had to create a small business report. The technical interview started with a 10-minute presentation. I also had opportunities to chat with the assessors during mealtimes and on the evening of the first day. The food and accommodation were great, and the whole assessment centre covered what I expected. The mini exam was tough, but the rest was enjoyable. The interview itself was friendly and relaxed.
- Can you share an instance where you had to adhere strictly to rules, whether in a social setting or during your studies/work?
- Describe a group project you were part of and the specific role you played in it.
Head of Process Capability
Submitted an online application. Was then invited for an interview which involved preparing and delivering a 10-minute presentation on 'What 3 attributes does a successful Functional Head require?'. The interview itself lasted over an hour, where they really dug into my skills and knowledge from my CV and application, discussed the role's potential scope, and asked some tough questions. Unfortunately, the communication after the interview was really bad - no updates, no response either way for a position I was shortlisted for. Eventually got feedback months later after chasing them with emails and calls. It really put me off working for them.
- What is your 'First-100 day plan' if you get the position?
Civil/Structural Engineer
The interview was very detailed and in-depth with great interviewers. It was conducted over Teams online with two interviewers who were very thorough. They talked through potential projects and development, and asked knowledge on various civil and design topics.
- What is your knowledge on Concrete Design?
- What is your knowledge on Steel Design?
- What is your knowledge on Foundation Design?
