They gave me a call initially and asked me to submit my resume, which I did the following weekend. After that, they called me back and began by asking about the project I'm currently working on. Since they needed someone urgently, the technical questions were minimal, and the focus was primarily on salary discussions.

I did a bunch of phone interviews with a consulting firm in NY. I was really interested because I wanted to use my background in computing and analysis from my PhD in experimental particle physics in a more profitable way. The main issue they seemed to have with me was whether I could switch from the slow, hard work of academic research to the fast, results-driven consulting world. I managed to convince the recruiter that I could contribute and that my "big science" experience with big teams and strict deadlines in HEP would be a plus. I got an offer, but turned it down because the starting salary seemed more for a recent grad than for a PhD (even though I just graduated). Looking back, I think that was a mistake. I've talked to some tech recruiters since and have changed my mind. My current feeling is that your advanced degree doesn't really impact your starting salary at a new company. Companies treat new grads the same, regardless of their academic background. However, you can use your experience (not just the title) to quickly move up to better pay.

The interview process was pretty straightforward. I had a face-to-face interview where the focus wasn't on technical skills but rather on joining dates and salary negotiations. Although I was technically approved, I wasn't shortlisted due to salary reasons. The company's environment seemed good, though.
