First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences).
Technician
The interview process involved two rounds. Initially, there was a phone call, followed by an invitation to come onsite for the second round. They covered travel expenses for the round trip. A presentation was also part of the process. The experience was very positive.
- What are your thoughts on how you would integrate into the team?
Postdoctoral Fellow
This is a machine learning/deep learning position, and the interviews are conducted online. The HR person was nice and friendly, but they seemed to prefer candidates with a pure CS background over those from different fields.
- Can you tell me about your past projects and explain why you'd be a good fit for this role?
Ph.D. Student
I applied to the Institute of Neuroscience in 2010. It started with a brief introduction. Then, about 10 people asked me questions, mostly about my previous work in experimental biology or other academic areas. They also checked some basic neuroscience knowledge. For me, I had to explain the action potential. Finally, I had to translate a short paragraph from a research paper. It was okay to ask the PIs if I didn't understand a word. Good luck!
- Could you explain the action potential?
- Are you familiar with the animal models used at our institute?
- Can you describe the principles of Mass Spectrum?
Researcher
It was a pretty easy interview overall, mostly focused on background questions and then a work presentation, kind of like a seminar. During the presentation, they asked some good technical questions related to the work. The whole vibe was friendly.
- Just a background checking sort of chat, I can hardly remember any specific interview questions.
- During the presentation, there were technical questions asked about the work.
