Product Manager
I went through 5 rounds: recruiter call, hiring manager zoom, high level manager call, team HR zoom, and technical director zoom. The final round would have been with a VP or head of the department. The conversations were great and I liked the questions asked, which covered skills, technical experience, and personality. Culture fit seemed important. Scheduling was a major issue; I'd confirm availability, only for them to say the interviewer wasn't available. After my last round, I had to follow up for two weeks to be told they'd rethought the role and weren't hiring. This was disappointing after a month of interviews. Red flags included: no sick days (work or make up time), no cobra coverage negotiation despite no immediate health insurance, one interviewer's view that marketing/merchandising are 'emotional' and don't use quant data, pressure to come into the office for a remote role if local, perception of politicking for growth, and most interviewers having been there 6+ years with only one having startup experience.
- Tell me about a passion outside of work.
- What is a soft skill you are actively trying to improve?
Product Manager
Started with a screening call, then chatted with the hiring manager. Then there was a panel interview with peers, which was actually four separate interviews, and then a culture interview with someone from HR.
- Can you tell me about something outside of work you've recently become deeply interested in and learned extensively about?
Product Manager
The recruiter call went well. After that, I interviewed with three different people over two days. Two of the interviews seemed to go very well, and the interviewers seemed enthusiastic about me. The third interview was with an HR person who has a degree in psychology. She asked me a question about a time when I received some negative feedback. I answered the question very honestly, but this was something that happened in 1998, 17 years ago. I went on to tell her how I worked on that, and it has not been a problem in 17 years. The rest of the interview went fine. Since then, six weeks ago, I have heard nothing but radio silence. I sent thank you notes to the three people, but they have lacked the courtesy to respond or send a "thanks, but no thanks" email. After I spent all that time preparing, interviewing, and following up, you would think I'd at least deserve the courtesy of some kind of feedback. But no, not from Carter's.
- Can you share an instance where you received negative feedback?
