First spoke with the talent team, who seemed unfamiliar with the specific requirements of the role and didn't provide details about the job until the second interview. The second interview consisted of general questions, not technical ones, and they were seeking leadership potential without offering commensurate compensation.

So like, making unscheduled calls to talent is a big no-no. Candidates already have jobs, you know? They can't always be ready for random calls or phone interviews from the hiring team. It's just basic courtesy to schedule interviews via email beforehand to make sure they're free. This kind of thoughtlessness right at the start can scare away good people and hints that Carlotz might not be cool with employees' personal time or work-life balance later on.

I started with a phone call with HR, then went to the store to meet the team. This included the Sales Coach, Head Coach, and General Manager. They were all really nice and easy to talk to. The Sales Coach gave me a tour of the lot, explained how things were set up, and asked me some questions. After that, I went inside to talk with the Head Coach and General Manager. They seemed really excited about the company and were very involved in the interview.

Behavioral Technical Other

First, I was contacted by HR and went through a series of questions and a personality test. IMPORTANTLY, if you miss a call from HR, you can't reach them. Anyone who answers will tell you it's not possible to connect. After the initial screening, I went to the actual store and met the GM, who I really liked. Unfortunately, the GM isn't the one making the hiring decision; it's one of the people who called me from corporate. Then came more phone interviews with people from corporate. They asked standard questions, and seemed more focused on their pre-scripted questions rather than trying to get to know me. They kept saying things like, 'we are very different' and asked about culture. Basically, they were talking in circles. The final interview, the fifth one overall, was on the phone. I tried to ask about things that were important to me as a potential employee to see if it was a good fit, you know, the practical details! Because, as in all interviews, it's not just about them interviewing me, but me interviewing them too. Their pushing me to avoid my own questions and stick to their pre-scripted ones wasn't a good sign. The 'culture' isn't for seasoned sales professionals; it's retail sales with a promise to expand into auto sales. I think I was ghosted because I didn't play along by not asking my pre-scripted questions.
