Project Manager
The job description stated Technical Project Manager, but the title was just Project Manager. The salary was lower than expected for the Northern VA area given the technical SDLC expertise required. I was asked about my salary range, and I countered by asking for the job's pay band. I was initially excited about this role and the opportunity, but the low salary was a disappointment.
- Would you be alright with commuting to Centreville three times a week?
- Can you lead without having direct authority?
Project Manager
After sending in my resume and cover letter, I got an email from a hiring manager/consultant who then called me for a quick chat. The call was to go over the role's high-level expectations and see if I was still interested. After that, I had a 30-minute meeting with the hiring manager, who would be my boss if I got the job. In this meeting, I was asked general questions about myself and my views on project management, mostly about strengths, handling conflict, and project processes. Next, I talked to a Project and Product Manager at CARFAX. Here, I went into more detail about my project management background, like what I've done, the types of projects, and how I managed them. Following these two conversations, they made a decision and I got a job offer over the phone.
- Can you define what a project is to you?
- How do you stay organized, both for yourself and for projects?
- Describe your method for managing conflicts.
Project Manager
The interview process was pretty straightforward. It started with a video call, and then there was an in-person meeting. The questions they asked were simple and to the point, focusing on the job and how to handle various interpersonal scenarios. The in-person part was initially set up as multiple meetings with different managers, but one manager asked if we could combine them to save time since he had to leave early. He joked about it, but it kind of bothered me. The recruiter also made several promises about keeping in touch and about the job details, but they were unreliable each time.
- What steps would you take if a project's timeline is at risk of not being met?
- How do you approach navigating different interpersonal situations?
- If a project is behind schedule, what actions would you take?
