First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Careers In Nonprofits.
Program Coordinator
Recruiters at this company seem unaware of the nonprofit sector's specifics and are often unprofessional. They've missed scheduled phone interviews despite initiating contact. Some recruiters appear more focused on their personal brands or side projects like podcasts than on connecting job seekers with suitable roles. Additionally, many temporary-to-permanent positions are significantly underpaid, sometimes by as much as $10,000. It's advisable to only consider roles here if you're in a desperate situation.
- Which kinds of organizations are you enthusiastic about working with?
Assistant
I was contacted for a job, but when I got to the interview, they told me it was filled and they wanted to interview me for a different role because I have recruiter experience. I went to grad school to get out of recruiting and work in a nonprofit, but this organization isn't a nonprofit. The interviewer said I did well but should have detailed my recruiter experience more when asked. I explained I didn't know I was interviewing for a recruiter role and wanted to work in a nonprofit. I felt like I was tricked into this interview. My advice is to confirm the position hasn't been filled before going downtown. It was a waste of time and shows how desperate they are for staff.
- Can you elaborate on your background in recruiting?
Recruiter
I first met with a junior recruiter, then the manager, then a senior manager, and finally the President. The process also included a lengthy written assignment. It was a long drawn-out process, and they asked me to come back multiple times. They sometimes mentioned a higher-level person might be free that day, but they were always busy, so I had to return again. Everyone was very friendly, and I got to ask the current staff questions while touring the office.
- How would you handle a customer who reported a negative past experience with the company?
Board Member
Showed my interest and experience in non-profits. We talked about fundraising ideas, what was successful and what wasn't. We also threw around ideas for the rescue's structure and foster duties, including their requirements and obligations. Branding was also on the table.
- Could you explain your interest and experience?
- What fundraising opportunities have you seen success with, and what hasn't worked?
- Let's brainstorm the structure of the rescue and foster responsibilities, criteria, and obligations.
