Applying for this student gig is tough and super competitive. First thing is to hit up the Government of Canada FSWEP online portal. If you don't have the link, just google it. You gotta have your First-Aid CPR ‘C’, PCOC, and VHF-DSC certs, plus a legit driver’s license (clean record) and some boating chops. If they pick you from the applicants, you’ll take a 2-hour exam on boating safety, navigation signs, road rules, and stuff. You need a 70% to pass. If that goes well, you’ll do an in-person graded interview with questions about what you know. Nail that, and you might get an offer for training. It’s a REALLY competitive spot, but man, is it worth it. This IRB thing has been the best thing for me in college. I think I got 98% on the exam.

The interview process involved STAR type questions. Additionally, interview questions were sent to references via email and they were expected to fill them out. This was much more intensive than a usual reference check. You should do your references a favour and give them a heads up that it will be a bit of work.

It was an online interview, and mostly they asked questions to get to know you as a person and what your interests are. It was mostly situational and behavioral questions, with the most technical question being about your electronics experience.
