First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Canada Border Services Agency.
Administrative Assistant
The interview process was straightforward and not overly complicated. They asked basic questions. Your previous experience, whether volunteer or paid work in any sector, was sufficient to answer the questions. They placed an emphasis on problem-solving abilities. There's also a federal student work program you can explore applying for.
- What makes you a good fit for this position?
Media Monitor
The hiring process started with the Federal Student Work Program. It took a while, a few months, for HR to get in touch. After they did, I had to complete two writing tests and then had a follow-up interview with two HR specialists. That was the initial part. After this, I waited another couple of months and then finally got contacted by the department that wanted to interview me. They followed up and I ended up getting the position as a casual worker.
- In a behavioral context, how would you handle a situation where a colleague informs you about an information breach?
Project Manager
First, there was a written exam. Then, an in-person interview happened, which was pretty boring. There weren't any interesting questions or other conversation during the interview; they could have just given me another written test. After that, they did a reference check and all. However, after the reference check, they completely ghosted me. No responses to my 10+ emails. I found the HR person on LinkedIn and they blocked me!! All I wanted was to know the status. It was a horrible process. How can they get quality candidates if they don’t respect candidates’ time and efforts?
- How do you handle managing stakeholders?
Student Border Services Officer
The interview tested a variety of competencies outlined by the CBSA in private, confidential communications leading up to the actual interview. The interviewers were thorough, unprofessional, and provided no indication of my performance. I have participated in a number of professional interviews and found the structured nature of the SBSO interview with the CBSA to be extremely thorough, professional, and conducted in a manner to mitigate bias on the part of the interviewers.
- The contents of the interview are strictly confidential.
