First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Calspan.
Software Engineer
I applied online and then HR reached out for a phone screen. The HR person was nice and set up an interview with the hiring manager for the following week. The hiring manager interview went okay, and they said I'd hear back in a week or two, but I never did. It would have been nice to get a rejection email, especially since I spent a few hours on it. Some odd things about the job: they wanted a software engineer for second shift, which is strange and wasn't in the job posting. The job has been up for over a year, which is also a red flag. Reviews mention expecting at least 50 hours a week, and I got that vibe during the interview.
- Could you tell me about your general job-related experience?
Wind Tunnel Technician
My interview at Calspan was a really good time. I started with HR, then talked to an engineering manager, then a facilities manager, and finally a technical director. They showed me around the place so I could meet the people I'd be working with. Nobody was scary, and everyone I talked to was friendly and easy to talk to. The questions weren't too weird, mostly the typical stuff. The engineering manager asked about my future plans and my strengths and weaknesses, and also some technical stuff. The facilities and technical directors seemed more interested in my personality, though they did ask a couple of technical questions too.
- Describe a time you had a workplace conflict and how you handled it.
Fluid Systems Engineer
Applied online and heard back for a phone screening within a couple days. The phone screen was with talent acquisition, and they asked about my current role and some behavioral questions. A few days later, I was scheduled for a Teams interview with potential hiring managers and department heads. It was an hour long, and they presented the company and discussed active projects. They then inquired about my resume experiences and their relevance to these projects. It was a conversational and relaxed interview with no unexpected technical questions. I received an offer about a week later, making the total process about 3 weeks from application to offer. The team was very pleasant, responsive, and easy to talk to. I declined the offer as another company presented an opportunity more aligned with my career goals.
- Could you tell me about your greatest strength?
- What has been your biggest success in your current role?
- Can you describe your experience with program X and how it relates to our current program Y?
Engineer
The interview was very warm and welcoming. You get a good grasp of what they do and the team really makes you feel comfortable during the entire process. They are very open and honest with you. Great group of people.
- What are your interests with your career and how can they help accomplish company goals?
- How can company goals be accomplished with personal employee goals?
- Can you show us your thought process on problem solving?
