First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center.
HR
The interview process was super smooth. They give great feedback and it seems like an amazing team to work for. They use competency-based interviewing to make sure they're hiring the right skills for the job. They were very communicative throughout the process.
- What about Callen-Lorde's mission appeals to you?
Client Care Supervisor
The interviewers mixed up my interview time with another applicant, got my name wrong, and also got the meeting time wrong. They called again the next day for a different applicant, which was very confusing! The salaries are really low for the cost of living in NYC. They mentioned the health insurance is good, but that's expected for a health center. We should all agree that everyone deserves universal healthcare, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Health insurance should be standard, not an extra perk. Focus on offering a livable wage instead of just highlighting health insurance.
- Can you share your previous experiences?
- What challenges have you encountered, and how did you handle them?
- How familiar are you with the center?
Patient Navigator
The interview process was pretty standard, nothing impressive or exciting. They asked about previous job experience, interests, and how I would handle the position. Sometimes the HR rep plays bad-cop. They did ask me about my goals and how I would handle the next level position, which made me think "yay, a future here!". But never again in my position there did they ask me about my goals or help me reach them. Don't over prepare, they aren't stellar interviewers. They just want to hear you're committed to the mission and that you'll take a low salary because you're noble of heart.
- What would be your approach to coordinating the department as a care coordinator?
- Tell me about your career aspirations.
- How would you approach a role at the next level?
Care Coordinator
It was a good interview experience, I talked to a few people in each of the 2 interviews and also had a phone screen with HR before that. They weren't super hard but definitely not easy either. I met with both managers and front line staff which was cool because I got to meet pretty much the whole team.
- How would you manage different scenarios involving staff?
- What would you do in various client-related situations?
